My 1st NaNoWriMo

It is November I am attempting my first NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writers Month).  I have to admit I was a little hesitant to give it a try.  50,000 words in one month is a lot.  Then I found out we could write crap.  Yea Crap is the theme for the Des Moines regions group.  Yes we can write crap and it counts in our 50,000 word total.  We can write and write and write as long as we don’t go back and edit what we have written.  What did I have to loose?

So far my total word count is 18,002 (as of the 15th day of the month).  I’m running a little behind the goal of 1,667 per day but I have plans to catch up on the weekends and during the week by attending a few write-ins which are held around town.  You can’t believe the writing energy that flows at these write-ins.  We are all there with one goal to write 50,000 words in the month of November.  Some of it may be crap but we are writing.

My writer’s group met on Saturday, November 1st which was day 1 of NaNoWriMo.  We extended our meeting time so we could include a few timed writings.  This began our total word count for the month.  We all brought food to maintain our energy level while we churned out as many words as we could.  We managed to do a lot more talking and eating than we did writing but then we always do.

I sat Sunday afternoon aside to attend the day’s local write-in with another of my writer’s group friends.  We managed to crank out quite a few thousand more words.  The three hours scheduled for the write-in went amazingly fast.  We broke it down into 30 minute timed writings.  By the end of the write-in I believe the total words written during the time we were there was well over 38,000.  I was amazed.  People of all different age groups attended but we all have one thing in common, we each want to make our 50,000 word count by the time November comes to an end.   Some of us are sure we are going to achieve our goal but then some of us are highly doubtful.  One thing for sure is we are all cheering each other on.

So far I have managed to keep my enthusiasm high and my word count at a decent level.  I even will go so far as to say I will be willing to try NaNoWriMo again next year.  So if you haven’t heard from me, gotten as many emails these past few weeks or if you have been expecting a telephone call you haven’t received.  Forgive me.  It’s not that I have forgotten you.  I am busy writing crap!
